Zaverchand was born on 28th August 1896 in Chotila village of Gujarat state. A sample of his collection of folk tales from Saurashtra has recently been published in English, with the translation done by his son Vinod Meghani. His poems are taught as a part of the syllabus in Gujarat Board Schools (GSEB).

ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણીનો જન્મ ગુજરાતના ચોટીલામાં કાલિદાસ અને ધોલીમા મેઘાણીના ઘરે થયો હતો. તેમના પિતા કાલિદાસ પોલીસ દળમાં કામ કરતા હતા અને તેથી ઘણી વખત નવી જગ્યાએ બદલી કરવામાં આવતી હતી જેના કારણે ઝવેરચંદનું મોટાભાગનું શિક્ષણ રાજકોટમાં જ થતું હતું. તેમને બે ભાઈઓ લાલચંદ અને પ્રભાશંકર હતા. તેણે 24 વર્ષની ઉંમરે દમયંતી નામની સ્ત્રી સાથે લગ્ન કર્યા હતા અને તેની પત્નીના નિધન બાદ તેણે 36 વર્ષની ઉંમરે ચિત્રાદેવી સાથે લગ્ન કર્યા હતા. તેને 9 બાળકો હતા જેમાંથી 3 છોકરીઓ ઈન્દુ, પદ્માલા અને મુરલી હતી, જ્યારે 6 છોકરાઓ, જેમ કે મહેન્દ્ર, મસ્તાન, નાનક, વિનોદ, જયંત અને અશોક.
