When the Giant looks out his window, he sees the children playing amongst the trees and realizes his folly in keeping them out. He goes outside, and the children run away, except one boy who was too short to climb the tree and was crying. This was the only part of the garden in which Winter was still present, and the tree was trying to lower itself, but the child was too short. The Giant took the boy and put him in the tree, dispelling winter, and then tore down his wall. All the children come back and play.
The Giant allowed the children to always play in his garden, but never saw the one boy he put in the tree. He asks the children, but they don’t know him. After many years, when the Giant is old, he sees the boy and runs out joyously. He is angered when he sees the holes put into the boy’s hands and feet, but the boy calms him and says he will take him to his garden, which is paradise. When the other children come the next day, they see the giant dead under a tree, with a smile on his face.
